LHS Varsity Cheer wins state title

Jan 08 2021

Lexington High School’s Varsity Competitive Cheer Team recently won the South Carolina Class 5A state title, preventing county-rival Chapin High School from earning their sixth consecutive title.

On Dec. 19, 2020, the team’s 26 cheerleaders competed against the top 12 high school teams in the state at the Florence Civic Center. LHS outscored CHS 340–337 to earn the school’s sixth state competitive cheer title in school history.

This year, the team captured the first 5A “Triple Crown” by winning the Region Championship, Lower State Championship and the 5A State Championship.

“I think we will be on cloud nine for at least a year,” said Head Coach Leigh L. Watson.

“These athletes met every challenge this year with determination and grace, and I could not be more proud to be their coach. We are very honored to be the class 5A State Champion and can’t wait to get started preparing to defend our title next year.”

The squad is made up of eighth through 12th grade students. Their two-minute-and-15-second routine combined stunting, tumbling, jumps and dance.

They competed in five invitational tournaments, capturing three first-place finishes, before winning the State Qualifier ahead of 29 teams in early December.

River Bluff High School’s cheerleading team placed third at the State Competition, with a score of 313.
